About Allotments in Torquay, Devon

The Quinta Viewpoint Allotment site is located along the top of one of the highest points in Torquay, and offers spectacular views over Lyme bay.

The concept and practice of allotment gardening has been in existence for hundreds of years, and the Quinta Viewpoint Allotments have been used for growing fruit and vegetables for around 70 of those. It has been said that this area was originally an apple orchard, and several apple trees still remain, providing a surplus of apples to our allotment holders every autumn.

Alongside the outside of the allotments, runs a narrow footpath, sometimes called ‘Piggy Lane’. This is because it was common to keep domestic pigs in orchards, where they would eat the fallen apples, and keep the soil well fertilised too.

In the 20th century, allotment gardening in Torbay gained popularity mostly because of the 1st and 2nd wars. The government requisitioned land from various local green areas, to be used for growing food for everyone. During a time of food shortages and rationing, gardens, public and private parks, commons were all deployed for to increase food production.

The famous ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign encouraged the public to produce their own food, save money, and cope with food shortages and lack of variety.

After the war, food rationing continued into the 1950s, and we believe that Quinta Viewpoint Allotments would have started to be used for growing vegetables rather than just apples during this time.

Many people found allotment gardening to be a great option if they did not have a big garden at home, and many enjoyed allotment gardening as a healthful hobby, even after the food shortages ended. This is true to this day, allotment gardening is as sociable or as quiet and peaceful hobby as you prefer. Most allotment plot holders are friendly and helpful people, and this is very true at Quinta Viewpoint. The waiting lists are unfortunately very long, and this is especially true now, as many people started gardening during the COVID lockdowns. Post COVID, we see food prices skyrocketing, and the demand for allotment places is even more.
